STATEMENT
과학자이던 예전에 실험실에서 겪은 일이다. 다음 날 중요한 실험을 앞두고 미생물을 배양할 때면, 접종된 배지 용기에 종종 하트 모양을 그려 넣거나, 밤에 퇴근 전에 인큐베이터를 열고 “잘 부탁해, 좋은 밤 보내렴”이라고 인사를 건네곤 했다. 그러면 신기하게도 다음 날 오전 실험실에 출근했을 때, 아이들이 평소보다 건강하게 자라 있는 것을 확인하곤 했다. 이 경험을 몇몇 동료들과 나누었을 때, 이것이 비단 나만의 경험이 아니라는 것을 알게 되었다. 각자의 방법으로 마음을 전하면, 미생물은 화답했다. 그때부터였는지 모른다. 우리가 그들과도 소통할 수 있을지 모른다고 생각하기 시작한 것이. 이 깨달음은 나와 이 작은 생명체 사이의 경계를 초월하는 깊은 연결감을 불러일으켰다.
나는 인간이 자연을 외부의 대상으로 인식하는 관성에 주목한다. 많은 이들이 자연과 인간을 분리된 존재로 여기며, 자연적인 것과 인공적인 것을 대립하는 개념으로 받아들인다. 이는 자연의 불확실성으로부터 격리된 채 통제되는 (하지만 그것이 최적인지는 의문스러운) 인공 시스템을 구축해 온 인류의 오랜 집착에서 비롯된 것일지 모른다. 하지만 개미가 개미집을 짓고, 새가 둥지를 만들듯이, 인간이 만든 건축물 또한 자연의 일부로 볼 수는 없을까? 우리는 집 안의 화분을 보며 자연이 가까이 있어 좋다고 말하지만, 정작 우리 자신이 자연의 일부라는 사실은 자주 잊는다. 여기에 눈에 보이지 않지만 우리와 늘 함께하는 미생물은 우리가 자연과 분리되어 있지 않다는 사실을 조용히 일깨워준다. 우리 내부와 외부를 오가며 신체를 확장하는 미생물은 인간과 자연 사이의 경계를 흐리게 만드는 존재이다.
나아가 나는 인간을 독립된 단일 개체가 아니라, 수많은 미생물과 얽혀 있는 거대한 생명 시스템의 일부로 인식한다. 우리는 스스로가 자신의 신체적 주도권을 쥔 주체라고 믿지만, 실상은 미생물 지능(Microbial Intelligence)에 의해 구동되는 생체 기계일지도 모른다. 인간의 몸은 우리 안팎의 미생물이 끊임없이 에너지를 교환하고 신호를 주고받으며 작동하는 하나의 정교한 시스템인 셈이다. 나는 작업을 통해 인간 중심적인 사고의 틀을 벗어나, 우리라는 존재에 깃든 타자의 목소리를 경청하며 그들과의 새로운 공생 감각을 탐구하고자 한다.
This happened when I was a scientist in the lab. When culturing microorganisms before an important experiment the next day, I would often draw a heart on the plate containing the inoculated medium, or open the incubator before leaving at night and say, “Please take care, have a good night.” The next morning, upon arriving at the lab, I would surprisingly find the microbes growing somehow healthier than usual. Sharing this experience with a few colleagues, I learned that this wasn’t an experience exclusive to me. When we sent our care in our own ways, the microorganisms reciprocated. Perhaps that was when it began—the moment I started thinking that we might be able to communicate with them too. This realization sparked a sense of connection that transcended the boundary between myself and these small life forms.
I focus on the habitual tendency to perceive nature as an external object. Many view nature and humanity as separate entities, accepting natural and artificial as opposing concepts. This may stem from humanity’s long-standing obsession with constructing controlled artificial systems—isolated from the uncertainties of nature—though whether such systems are truly optimal remains questionable. Yet, just as ants build anthills and birds weave nests, could we not view human architecture as part of nature? We admire a potted plant for bringing nature closer while forgetting that we ourselves are nature. Here, microorganisms—invisible yet always with us—quietly remind us that we are not separate from the natural world. By moving between our interior and exterior and extending the boundaries of our bodies, microorganisms are entities that blur the lines between humanity and nature.
Furthermore, I recognize humans not as independent individuals, but as part of a vast life system intertwined with countless microorganisms. While we believe ourselves to be the masters of our own physical agency, we may, in fact, be biomachines driven by Microbial Intelligence. The human body serves as a sophisticated system where microbes within and around us constantly exchange energy and relay signals, manifesting complex biological activities. Through my work, I seek to move beyond anthropocentric thinking, listening instead to the voices of the others dwelling within us and exploring a new sense of symbiosis.
BIO
김대희는 환경공학 박사학위를 취득하고 미생물연료전지 및 바이오 연료 분야의 연구를 진행하며 학술적 토대를 쌓았다. 연구를 지속하는 과정에서 기술적 접근만으로는 포착하기 어려운 환경과 생명 시스템의 복합성과 감각적 차원에 주목하게 되었다.
현재 바이오미디어 아티스트 김대희는 미생물을 인간과 자연의 경계를 흐리게 만드는 존재로 정의하며, 인간을 미생물 지능에 의해 구동되는 생체 기계로 바라본다. 인간과 미생물, 나아가 환경을 하나의 통합된 생명체로 인식하여 신체의 경계를 가로지르며 흐르는 에너지 교환과 신호의 상호작용을 탐구하고, 미시 세계의 데이터를 번역한 음악적 경험(관계의 미학)을 통해 새로운 공생 감각을 제안한다. 국립아시아문화전당(ACC), 인천아트플랫폼, 파라다이스아트랩, ZER01NE 등에서 퍼포먼스, 전시, 워크숍을 통해 관객과 만나왔다.
Dey Kim holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering, having established a robust academic foundation through his research on microbial fuel cells and biofuels. Throughout his research career, he became attuned to the sensory dimensions and complexities of environmental and life systems that technical approaches alone could not fully capture.
Currently, as a biomedia artist, Dey Kim defines microorganisms as entities that blur the boundaries between humanity and nature, viewing humans as biomachines driven by Microbial Intelligence. Regarding humans, microbes, and the environment as a single integrated living entity, he explores the interaction of signals and energy exchange that flows across the boundaries of the body. He proposes a new symbiotic sense through an aesthetic of relationships—a musical experience translated from the data of the microscopic world. His work has been showcased at institutions such as the Asia Culture Center (ACC), Incheon Art Platform, Paradise Art Lab, and ZER01NE, where he engages with audiences through performances, exhibitions, and workshops.
