STATEMENT
과학자이던 예전에 실험실에서 겪은 일이다. 다음 날 중요한 실험을 앞두고 미생물을 배양할 때면, 접종된 배지 용기에 종종 하트 모양을 그려 넣거나, 밤에 퇴근 전에 인큐베이터를 열고 “잘 부탁해, 좋은 밤 보내렴”이라고 인사를 건네곤 했다. 그러면 신기하게도 다음 날 오전 실험실에 출근했을 때, 아이들이 평소보다 건강하게 자라 있는 것을 확인하곤 했다. 이 경험을 몇몇 동료들과 나누었을 때, 이것이 비단 나만의 경험이 아니라는 것을 알게 되었다. 각자의 방법으로 마음을 전하면, 미생물은 화답했다. 그때부터였는지 모른다. 우리가 그들과도 소통할 수 있을지 모른다고 생각하기 시작한 것이. 이 깨달음은 나와 이 작은 생명체 사이의 경계를 초월하는 깊은 연결감을 불러일으켰다.
그 연결감은 오래된 질문을 다시 꺼내게 했다. 우리는 왜 자연을 바깥의 것으로 여기게 되었을까. 집 안의 화분을 보며 자연이 가까이 있어 좋다고 말하지만, 정작 우리 자신이 자연의 일부라는 사실은 자주 잊는다. 지금 이 순간에도 우리 몸을 서식지 삼아 살아가는 수많은 미생물이 있다. 우리 내부와 외부를 끊임없이 오가는 그들은 인간과 자연 사이의 경계를 조용히 허물며, 우리를 인간-미생물-환경이라는 거대한 생명 시스템 속으로 엮어낸다. 그럼에도 우리는 그들을 거의 감각하지 못한 채 살아간다.
나의 작업은 그 간극에서 시작된다. 그저 보이지 않는 존재를 보려는 것이 아니라, 그들이 만들어내는 흔적과 신호 속에 몸을 두고 관계를 맺어가는 것이다. 이는 우리가 이미 그들과 함께 얽혀 있다는 감각을 회복하는 일이다. 나를 둘러싼 보이지 않는 연결들을 조금씩 마주하면서, 우리는 조금씩 달라질 것이다.
This is something that happened years ago, when I was working as a scientist. In the days leading up to an important experiment, I would sometimes draw a small heart on the petri dishes where the microbes were growing, or open the incubator before leaving at night and whisper, “Please do well. Have a good night.” And strangely, when I arrived at the lab the next morning, they seemed to have grown healthier than usual. When I shared this with a few colleagues, I found I wasn’t alone. When each of us found our own way to express care, the microbes responded. Perhaps it was from that moment that I began to wonder whether we might be able to communicate with them. This realization brought with it a deep sense of connection — one that dissolved the boundary between myself and these tiny living beings.
That sense of connection stirred an old question. Why have we come to see nature as something outside of us? We look at a houseplant and feel glad that nature is nearby, yet we often forget that we ourselves are part of nature. Even at this very moment, countless microbes live within us, making our bodies their habitat. Moving ceaselessly between our insides and outsides, they quietly erode the boundary between human and nature, weaving us into a vast living system of human-microbe-environment. And yet we go through life barely sensing them at all.
My work begins in that gap. Not simply to make the invisible visible, but to place the body among the traces and signals they produce, and to build relationships from there. It is an effort to recover the sense that we are already entangled with them. As we slowly come to face the invisible connections surrounding us, we will change — little by little.
BIO
김대희는 환경공학 박사학위를 바탕으로 연구를 지속하는 과정에서, 기술적 접근만으로는 포착하기 어려운 환경과 생명 시스템의 복합성과 감각적 차원에 주목하게 되었다. 이를 계기로 바이오·사운드 아티스트로서 미생물을 인간과 자연의 경계를 가로지르는 존재로 바라보며, 인간-미생물-환경의 얽힘을 감각하는 작업을 이어간다. 미생물의 흔적과 신호에 몸을 두고 관계를 맺어가면서, 우리가 이미 그들과 함께 존재하고 있다는 감각을 회복하고자 한다. 국립아시아문화전당(ACC), 인천아트플랫폼, 제로원, 파라다이스아트랩 등에서 퍼포먼스, 전시, 워크숍을 통해 관객과 만나왔다.
Drawing on a Ph.D. in Environmental Science & Engineering, Dey Kim came to recognize dimensions of complexity and sensory experience in living and ecological systems that technical approaches alone could not capture. Working as a bio-sound artist, he approaches microbes as beings that traverse the boundary between human and nature, making work that seeks to sense the entanglement of human-microbe-environment. By placing the body among the traces and signals of microbes and entering into relation with them, his practice aims to recover the sense that we already exist together, deeply intertwined. He has presented performances, exhibitions, and workshops at the Asia Culture Center (ACC), Incheon Art Platform, ZER01NE, and Paradise Art Lab, among others.
