“우리의 면역력을 높이고 근심에서 승리하게 인도하여 미지의 전염병으로부터 구원하실 프로바이오틱스, 작은 메시아를 경배하라. 소리부음을 받고 신령과 진정으로 찬양하라. 그리하여 작은 메시아의 임재를 목격하고 그의 은혜를 널리 알려라.”
유익균인 프로바이오틱스는 우리의 장 건강뿐만 아니라 주요 우울증 등을 완화하는 데 도움을 준다고 알려져 있다. 이렇게 인간을 육체적 그리고 정신적 질병에서 구원할 작은 메시아, 프로바이오틱스를 경배한다. 우리의 몸은 우리의 세포뿐 아니라 그와 비슷한 개수의 미생물과도 함께 이루어져, 몸의 기능을 함께 통제한다. 나와 미생물의 경계는 모호하여 구분 짓기 어렵고, 즉 작은 메시아는 우리 스스로이기도 하다. 스스로를 구원하기 위해 우리는 어떤 선택을 하고 살아가야 하는지에 대한 질문을 제기한다. 지구온난화로 영구동토층이 녹아 고대의 바이러스 및 미생물이 다시 깨어나, 코로나 이후 또 다른 팬데믹이 발생할지 모르는 불안감 속에서 우리는 위기의 지구환경을 구원하기 위해 어떻게 살아가야 할까.
“Worship the small messiah, probiotics, who shall strengthen our immunity, lead us to victory over anxiety, and deliver us from unknown plagues. Receive the outpouring of sound, and praise in spirit and truth. Witness the presence of the small messiah, and spread his grace far and wide.”
Probiotics, known as beneficial bacteria, are said to support not only our gut health but also alleviate conditions such as major depression. We worship probiotics—the small messiah who shall deliver us from physical and mental illness. Our bodies are composed not only of our own cells but also of a comparable number of microorganisms, which together govern bodily functions. The boundary between myself and microorganisms is blurred and difficult to draw—the small messiah, in other words, is also ourselves. This work raises the question of what choices we must make in order to save ourselves. As permafrost melts due to global warming and ancient viruses and microorganisms reawaken, we live with the anxiety that another pandemic may follow COVID-19. How, then, must we live in order to save a planet in crisis.
