미시적 연결 감각

예전에 실험실에서의 일이다. 다음 날 중요한 실험을 앞두고 미생물을 배양할 때면, 미생물이 접종된 배지 용기에 종종 하트를 그려 넣거나, 밤에 퇴근 전에 인큐베이터를 열고, “잘 부탁해, 좋은 밤 보내”라고 인사를 하곤 했다. 그러면 다음 날 오전 실험실에 출근해, 신기하게도 왠지 모르게 평소보다 건강히 자라 있는 아이들을 확인하게 되었다. 이 경험을 몇몇 동료들과 나누며, 비단 나만의 경험이 아니라는 것도 알게 되었다. 각자의 방법으로 마음을 보내면, 미생물은 화답했다. 그때부터였는지 모른다. 우리가 그들과도 소통할 수 있을지 모른다고 생각하기 시작한 것이.
작가는 음악가/사운드아티스트로 활동하며 연주자들 간의 상호작용으로 시공간에 흩뿌려지는 소리의 연결에 민감하게 반응하고, 또 현대음악을 매개로 우리 주변의 다양한 연결을 감각하는 커뮤니티 아트 프로그램을 진행하는 등, 비언어적 연결성 및 관계성을 알아차리는 일을 사운드 아트로 풀어내고 있다. 그런 것에 ‘관한’ 작업을 하기보다는, 그와 관련된 어떠한 환경을 만들고 그 안에서 일어나는 일을 관객과 함께 경험하고 관찰하는 방식을 선호한다. 이처럼 숨은 연결을 알아차리는 과정을 통해 작게나마 개인을 둘러싼 여러 층위의 관계를 사유하게 되며, 이가 다양한 사회적/환경적 이슈 논의의 출발점이 될 수 있으리라는 믿음이 생기기 시작했다.
그러다 과거의 미생물과의 경험이 떠올랐다. 돌이켜보니 주변 환경과의 숨은 연결을 이야기할 때 쉽게 간과되거나 혹은 상상하지 못하는 것이 우리와 미생물과의 연결이었다. 눈에 보이지는 않지만, 우리의 몸과 삶 깊숙이 관계를 맺고 있는 미생물과의 연결을 감각하는 방법은 없을까? 그 노력을 통해 미시적 관점의 숨은 연결을 조명하여, 모든 것은 다차원으로 연결되어 있음을 강조하고자 한다.
이에 <미시적 연결 감각>에서는 버섯을 반려 생물로 제안하며, 전시작품으로 그와 소통할 수 있는 장치를 제품(Mushroomie)의 형태로 제시한다. 또한 Mushroomie의 도움으로 친구가 된 느타리버섯 플로이(Pleu)가 음악을 하고 싶어 한다는 사실을 알게 되어 무대에 함께 오르게 된다는 이야기의 공연작품을 선보인다.
It was in the lab when I was a scientist. When cultivating microorganisms for important experiments on the next day, I sometimes drew hearts on the plates where microorganisms were inoculated and whispered “Have a good night” to them. Then I went to the laboratory the next morning, and strangely enough, I used to got healthier microbes than usual. I also learned that it was not just my own illusion, sharing this experience with colleagues. If you send your mind in your own way to microbes, they responded. It may have been since then, that I started to think we might be able to communicate with them, too.
After turning into an artist, I am working as a musician/sound artist, reacting sensitively to the connection of sounds scattered in time and space through interactions between performers, and facilitating a community art program sensing various connections around us through contemporary music. Through this process of noticing hidden links, I began to think of various layers of relationships one can have, and I began to believe that this could be the starting point for discussions on various social and environmental issues.
Then, my past experience with microorganisms came to mind. Come to think of it, it is the connection between human and microorganisms that is easily overlooked or unimaginable when talking about hidden connections with the surrounding environment.Is there a way to sense theconnection to microbes that are invisible, but deeply related to our bodies and lives? Through that effort, I would like to highlight the hidden connection of the microscopic perspective, and emphasize that everything is connected in multiple dimensions.
<Microscopic Sense of Connection> proposes mushrooms as pets, and presents a device called Mushroomie which enables communication between human and mushroom. In addition, there is a inter-species performance featuring Pleu, an oyster mushroom, and Dey Kim, a human being.
